CAN PLAYGROUNDS REDUCE RAPES

Authored by Hari Raam   Unfortunately, there is insufficient research on how to effectively use sport to minimise sexual abuse and how to use it as a platform to reach out to society. However, some suggestions for using playgrounds to reduce rape culture and sex crimes are discussed here. Sports are well suited to develop and promote healthy relationships, attitudes and behaviors that can reduce, and eliminate, rape and sexual assault, according to the researchers. Sports provides a fantastic stage for addressing sexual abuse with a wide and diversified audience at all age groups. In recent years, the number of children who are victimized for rape and sexual assault has increased. Violent crimes against underage children have more than doubled in the last few years in India. Minor girl victims accounted for more than 40 percent of the total. It is a country full of men because of a poor sex ratio imbalance, mostly due to unlawful sex selection abortions. Many do believe that ...

A REDEFINED, REDESIGNED APPROACH

Authored by Jayaroopinni S S As soon as I parked my vehicle in front of the ATM in one of the busiest streets in Chennai, an unmasked beggar woman with a newborn child came really close to me for alms. I got alarmed and asked her to wear a mask, which she did. This is not the first time I have encountered such an incident since the Covid outbreak. Paupers are everywhere to be seen in India especially in places of worship, restaurants, small tiffin centres, traffic signals, railway stations, etc. The then Union Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot in March 2021 informed Rajya Sabha that India has around 4 lakh beggars according to 2011 census 1 . Giving alms is considered as a dharma, act of love and compassion in various religions. We could still come across people who consider the same. But the modern age ‘begging’ is more than what we have known. When the states are providing food grains and other cooking essentials for a very low price, the context of what is kno...

World War 1 paused for Football

Authored by Hari Raam During World War I, it was the peak of the War, Germany and Britain were at warfare. A dramatic incident occurred on Christmas Day at Ypres, Belgium. Over two-thirds of the troops - approximately 1,00,000 people are known to have served in this epic battle zone. The war was fought between men in trenches before armored vehicles and modern technology. It was one of the most brutal and life-threatening ways of fighting a war. On plain lands and mountains, 8 to 15 feet trenches would be dug, and hundreds of soldiers will charge to the enemy trench, where enemy forces will open fire on them brutally. Most of them will be shot dead by the time they reach the enemy's trench, and the few survivors will try to kill the opponents within the trench, but the enemies will simply shoot them down due to their small numbers. A ‘win' is defined as capturing the enemy trench. During World War 1, the war was fought in this sort of way.   Snipers will be on the high a...

Is better grain storage facility a need of the hour in India?

Authored by Jayaroopinni S.S.   The Kharif season has begun with the start of South West monsoon in India. Food security has been the subject of concern in India. T he government has achieved a record procurement of wheat ( 38.97 million tonnes ) and rice ( 50.5 million tonnes ) in the 2019-2020 season 1 . In spite of record-breaking procurements, India ranked 94 among 107 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2020 2 . Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN ( FAO ) estimates that food loss and waste in India is at around 40% 3 . Farm silos are large steel cylindrical containers used in agriculture for bulk storage of grains with thermostat devices to maintain the moisture content of the grains. India had the modern silos built in the 1990s, but only now the government and private has resorted to an increasing silo production on realising its value. But still the most prevalent form of storing grains in India is ‘Cover and Plinth’. Cover and Plinth is nothing but t...

Hate BTS, Why?

Author - HARI RAAM    I've met several people who would laugh at K-Pop musicians, saying things like "they're girly" and "they look, homosexual." They misuse these terms in a derogatory manner, as well as insulting the music industry's hard work and talent as a whole.  BTS, a South Korean boy band, has become the face of the South Korean music industry and is largely responsible for its global success. K-Pop is a phrase used to describe the music produced in South Korea as a whole. The K-Pop industry has gained worldwide recognition in recent years, and it now has a relatively large fan base around the world. BTS is one of the best bands in the K-Pop industry, along with widespread love for the industry has come to an unimaginable amount of hatred, most of which is directed at the BTS. There are two basic reasons for hatred. One is toxic masculinity, and the other is Asian hatred, both of which are completely unreasonable. I frequently encounter people w...

ARE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS NOT SOCIAL ANYMORE?

Authored by  Jayaroopinni S S Let’s start with some facts It is recognized that ‘Friendster’ was the first proper social media platform that came into existence on 2002 1 . Since then, we have seen a bunch of social media platforms being developed. Facebook has average of 1.88 billion daily users as of 2021 2 being the world’s largest social media platform. Instagram is a tremendously growing social media platform and the so-called Generation Z prefer apps over websites. A ‘social’ revolution Social media platforms (SMPs) have their own benefits of socializing with people. SMPs built an alternate world where even the introverts and reserved people have become extroverts by sharing their views, chatting and getting along with others virtually. We are seeing many options from sharing images, texts, creating open and closed groups, a 24-hour story or an IGTV whatever it may be, SMPs offer wide range of options for virtual social interaction with people. Many bloggers and in...

TOXIC MASCULINITY: A REAL PROBLEM

Authored by HARI RAAM Toxic masculinity is nothing but a conventional idea of glorifying strength, aggressiveness or dominance which affects mental health. Countless men were diagnosed with a mental health condition but do not take any action, as they believe it makes them vulnerable. Men who talk about their emotional struggles are usually considered “less manly” or “weak person” ; it makes them feel vulnerable. As a result, men suppress their emotions, ignore their feelings, and dismiss their feminine qualities, which harms their mental health. Toxic masculinity is still a problem, and the best way to teach men that emotions do not devalue them or make them weak is to change the mentality in them from a young age. Toxic masculinity begins small and has a lifetime impact on young boys, who are growing up into young men. Telling a boy he shouldn’t show emotions because he is a man, can result in that child suppressing emotions in his entire life. Inappropriate behavior by referring to ...

RELIGIONS NEED TO BE REVIEWED

Authored by HARI RAAM Ages back when the idea of the constitution didn't exist, Religions did a pretty good job of ensuring the survival of this world. Now they are outdated, most of them are based on standards and laws that served human demands which existed thousands of years ago. Rules that was incorporated at the time when religion came into existence are still followed, no matter how inhumane they are.  Today, we have religious states in this world who have their own human rights documents rejecting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We can notice inequality and lack of basic human rights in countries that are religious republics. There are number of statistical examples to prove that religious countries fare very poorly compared to their secular counterparts. The religion-induced government is beneficial only to the ones who are power-hungry.  There is a difference between faith and blind faith. Faith is important to many, they live believing that their good deed...

WHAT DOES BEING HUMAN MEAN?

Authored by HARI RAAM Our Planet is about 4.5 billion years old and  we humans appeared on it  just 2,00,000 years ago . Our world and her countless species are part of an incredibly long and dynamic evolution, where we humans entered after a long period of time and played a very small role to this day. We all are members of the same anatomically modern human race, Homo sapiens who live in different parts of the world. Homo sapiens is a Latin term that means "thinking man." There are 180 species of primates which means they are the highest order of mammals and Homo sapiens is one of them. They share certain traits with other mammals, but they still have their distinct characteristics. The mechanism of human evolution can be established as the effects of key biological markers such as increased brain size, improvements in pelvic structure, and the beginnings of bipedalism, which means they walk upright on two legs rather than four legs, Their legs are longer than their arms as...
