I've met several people who would laugh at K-Pop musicians, saying things like "they're girly" and "they look, homosexual." They misuse these terms in a derogatory manner, as well as insulting the music industry's hard work and talent as a whole.
BTS, a South Korean boy band, has become the face of the South Korean music industry and is largely responsible for its global success. K-Pop is a phrase used to describe the music produced in South Korea as a whole. The K-Pop industry has gained worldwide recognition in recent years, and it now has a relatively large fan base around the world. BTS is one of the best bands in the K-Pop industry, along with widespread love for the industry has come to an unimaginable amount of hatred, most of which is directed at the BTS.
There are two basic reasons for hatred. One is toxic masculinity, and the other is Asian hatred, both of which are completely unreasonable. I frequently encounter people who believe that their manner humiliates a man's cultural identity.
The anti-BTS/K-Pop mentality is nothing less of a reflection of toxic masculinity. Each man has the right to have their own interpretation of masculinity, but it's the moment at which masculinity becomes "toxic" when you express your view through others' necks. One of the main reasons they receive hate comments is that they do not fulfill the typical "masculinity norms" and are "girly." I've often stated, masculinity is personal, and one type of masculinity cannot be imposed on everyone. The beauty standards in South Korea diverge from conventional beauty standards, especially for men, and some are called "feminine."
Another primary reason for the hatred of industry is the racial hatred of Asian’s in general. Asian racism is quite common around the world but it's not acceptable to bring it into music.
BTS has been subjected to a series of insults and has been criticized for their appearance. What is currently happening cannot be separated from their Asian identity. BTS was even questioned on why Asians spoke English.
Withstanding these hatreds BTS have some sound achievements:
- Partnership UNICEF.
- Grammy-nominated.
- The first K-Pop group to get a #1 on Billboard.
- Featured in Time Magazine.
- They swept all the Daesangs (grand prizes) at MAMA 2019.
- TIME - Entertainer of the year.
There are plenty of actual problems in the K-Pop industry. If someone truly wants to criticize the industry, they should focus on these issues rather than imposing masculinity ideals and racial hatred on an industry that already suffers from high standards of beauty and performance.
Due to their concern with their own personal aesthetic standards, for which they are frequently rejected even at work. Consider the issue of having to be "attractive" even to get a job. South Korea has the world's 10th highest rate of suicides and the tragedy has led to numerous K-Pop idols and budding K- Popstars.
The industry deserves criticism but disagreement or criticism is a lot different from hate. They're simply ordinary people trying to achieve their goals, and with one of the world's largest fan bases, they're likely to receive some criticism. However, hatred for ridiculous reasons is condemnable.
