RELIGIONS NEED TO BE REVIEWED

Authored by HARI RAAM

Ages back when the idea of the constitution didn't exist, Religions did a pretty good job of ensuring the survival of this world. Now they are outdated, most of them are based on standards and laws that served human demands which existed thousands of years ago. Rules that was incorporated at the time when religion came into existence are still followed, no matter how inhumane they are.

Today, we have religious states in this world who have their own human rights documents rejecting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We can notice inequality and lack of basic human rights in countries that are religious republics. There are number of statistical examples to prove that religious countries fare very poorly compared to their secular counterparts. The religion-induced government is beneficial only to the ones who are power-hungry.

There is a difference between faith and blind faith. Faith is important to many, they live believing that their good deeds will be acknowledged and fear of bad deeds. The problems lie in the differentiation of good and bad based on religious texts that are written thousands of years ago. In this world, the refusal to progress by certain religions has been costing both human rights and human lives. For example, homosexuality is still considered as a crime in most of the religions. Only some individuals are open to accept the idea of homosexuality while majority still sign your death warrant for being homosexual.

We have to accept the fact that religion is turning into a perfect tool of destruction, misuse of religion and radical propagation have led to an uncontrollable level of global terrorism. Fuelling religious radicalism is often done by imperialists which have killed millions in the last decade alone. The addition of religion to governance has always ended up in lack of human rights. Secularism should be envisioned by all nations. In India it always had elements of Hindu nationalism within it propagated and used by political bodies, criticism should be aimed at the authorities that want to use religions for political agendas.

Looking back at time, we can see many inhumane practices were abolished thanks to the people who criticised against it, otherwise we would still be living an era of sati.

Religions should be willing to reform themselves in line with this modern world. Religions should not ask you to be patriarchal, prejudiced against homosexual people, and outdated cavemen stereotypes. I personally believe Religions must be open for criticism and Questioning. Religions should tolerate criticism. Questioning is the key, look for relevancy and reasoning behind any practice of your religion. Realism should be the cult followed, it leads toward progress in society. Compare every existing ideology that fuels religions in this world, then go for the one with which you identify yourself the most. People who stand for progress should criticize and challenge every corner of prevailing faith, after considerable reasoning one is led to believe in any religious faith is welcomed.

TOXIC MASCULINITY: A REAL PROBLEM

Authored by HARI RAAM Toxic masculinity is nothing but a conventional idea of glorifying strength, aggressiveness or dominance which affects mental health. Countless men were diagnosed with a mental health condition but do not take any action, as they believe it makes them vulnerable. Men who talk about their emotional struggles are usually considered “less manly” or “weak person” ; it makes them feel vulnerable. As a result, men suppress their emotions, ignore their feelings, and dismiss their feminine qualities, which harms their mental health. Toxic masculinity is still a problem, and the best way to teach men that emotions do not devalue them or make them weak is to change the mentality in them from a young age. Toxic masculinity begins small and has a lifetime impact on young boys, who are growing up into young men. Telling a boy he shouldn’t show emotions because he is a man, can result in that child suppressing emotions in his entire life. Inappropriate behavior by referring to ...

World War 1 paused for Football

Authored by Hari Raam During World War I, it was the peak of the War, Germany and Britain were at warfare. A dramatic incident occurred on Christmas Day at Ypres, Belgium. Over two-thirds of the troops - approximately 1,00,000 people are known to have served in this epic battle zone. The war was fought between men in trenches before armored vehicles and modern technology. It was one of the most brutal and life-threatening ways of fighting a war. On plain lands and mountains, 8 to 15 feet trenches would be dug, and hundreds of soldiers will charge to the enemy trench, where enemy forces will open fire on them brutally. Most of them will be shot dead by the time they reach the enemy's trench, and the few survivors will try to kill the opponents within the trench, but the enemies will simply shoot them down due to their small numbers. A ‘win' is defined as capturing the enemy trench. During World War 1, the war was fought in this sort of way.   Snipers will be on the high a...

A REDEFINED, REDESIGNED APPROACH

Authored by Jayaroopinni S S As soon as I parked my vehicle in front of the ATM in one of the busiest streets in Chennai, an unmasked beggar woman with a newborn child came really close to me for alms. I got alarmed and asked her to wear a mask, which she did. This is not the first time I have encountered such an incident since the Covid outbreak. Paupers are everywhere to be seen in India especially in places of worship, restaurants, small tiffin centres, traffic signals, railway stations, etc. The then Union Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot in March 2021 informed Rajya Sabha that India has around 4 lakh beggars according to 2011 census 1 . Giving alms is considered as a dharma, act of love and compassion in various religions. We could still come across people who consider the same. But the modern age ‘begging’ is more than what we have known. When the states are providing food grains and other cooking essentials for a very low price, the context of what is kno...
