CAN PLAYGROUNDS REDUCE RAPES

 Authored by Hari Raam

Unfortunately, there is insufficient research on how to effectively use sport to minimise sexual abuse and how to use it as a platform to reach out to society. However, some suggestions for using playgrounds to reduce rape culture and sex crimes are discussed here. Sports are well suited to develop and promote healthy relationships, attitudes and behaviors that can reduce, and eliminate, rape and sexual assault, according to the researchers. Sports provides a fantastic stage for addressing sexual abuse with a wide and diversified audience at all age groups.

In recent years, the number of children who are victimized for rape and sexual assault has increased. Violent crimes against underage children have more than doubled in the last few years in India. Minor girl victims accounted for more than 40 percent of the total.

It is a country full of men because of a poor sex ratio imbalance, mostly due to unlawful sex selection abortions. Many do believe that such unbalanced ratios can contribute to an increase in crimes against women.

When rape is increasingly utilised to impose control and intimidate the powerless in India, it feels hopeless to fight back. Many believe that in a hierarchical, male dominance, and politically divided society, where hate is exploited to separate people for political purposes, this is unsurprising.

Children who are marginalised on multiple levels, for example being a racial or ethnic minority can receive support from sports. The role of sport in mitigating sexual assault is both strategic and vital because it is both a developmental system that touches millions of young people, as well as a sociocultural influencer that can catalyse change in society. A group culture that criticises sexual violence is one step in the right direction. The potential of sports to influence men and boys is undeniable. Even people who don't participate in sports directly but follow sports are influenced by them. Sports develop a society that does not divide it. Fortunately, the sport already teaches many qualities.

Studies have shown that the existence of child oriented recreational facilities similar to playgrounds minimises criminal activity among the young age group. While playing games on a playing ground, you train and develop habits, both on and off the ground. To become the greatest player, players must develop certain behaviors, but they must also develop habits that will help them be the best person off the ground. Social relationships are what bind us together. Playgrounds and parks allow area residents to interact, increasing connection and common interest in well-being. Following the principle of team effectiveness, grounds are the places that may foster social solidarity and, as an outcome, the desire to contribute for the public purpose, normalising healthy conduct. A better state of physical health on the ground may improve emotional stability. Mental maturity and health improvements may improve moral values.  Stress and depression are linked in specific to urban living, stress and anxiety are correlated. As a result of this psychiatric condition, there may be aggressive behaviors. But sports activity is found to promote serotonin, which is believed to relieve stress. It has been shown that walking, jogging, and playing sports on grounds or in public places can help enhance the psychological state. Because perceived freedom of choices and power are important components of standard of living, playgrounds may enhance that perception. Violent activities like sexual violence may be less necessary if there are limited choices and less power to abuse.

The government should build playgrounds and parks in place of underdeveloped areas. Replace an uncontrolled, built area with a neighborhood playground and you may curb spaces for harmful activities to reduce.

Reduced sexual crime rates are strongly correlated with social harmony. Community spirit is a powerful motivator. In addition to the impact of playgrounds on community spirit, communities that receive access to sports amenities may view this as an act of compassion, which may help reduce crime rates. Playgrounds and parks may encourage the public to safeguard and maintain these areas as a sense of ownership.

Public health and quality of life are improved physiologically and psychologically when safe, secure and accessible areas for sports activities are established.  The availability of these areas like playgrounds, parks, gyms, swimming pools, etc., may have a positive impact on the community against every violent activity.

TOXIC MASCULINITY: A REAL PROBLEM

Authored by HARI RAAM Toxic masculinity is nothing but a conventional idea of glorifying strength, aggressiveness or dominance which affects mental health. Countless men were diagnosed with a mental health condition but do not take any action, as they believe it makes them vulnerable. Men who talk about their emotional struggles are usually considered “less manly” or “weak person” ; it makes them feel vulnerable. As a result, men suppress their emotions, ignore their feelings, and dismiss their feminine qualities, which harms their mental health. Toxic masculinity is still a problem, and the best way to teach men that emotions do not devalue them or make them weak is to change the mentality in them from a young age. Toxic masculinity begins small and has a lifetime impact on young boys, who are growing up into young men. Telling a boy he shouldn’t show emotions because he is a man, can result in that child suppressing emotions in his entire life. Inappropriate behavior by referring to ...

World War 1 paused for Football

Authored by Hari Raam During World War I, it was the peak of the War, Germany and Britain were at warfare. A dramatic incident occurred on Christmas Day at Ypres, Belgium. Over two-thirds of the troops - approximately 1,00,000 people are known to have served in this epic battle zone. The war was fought between men in trenches before armored vehicles and modern technology. It was one of the most brutal and life-threatening ways of fighting a war. On plain lands and mountains, 8 to 15 feet trenches would be dug, and hundreds of soldiers will charge to the enemy trench, where enemy forces will open fire on them brutally. Most of them will be shot dead by the time they reach the enemy's trench, and the few survivors will try to kill the opponents within the trench, but the enemies will simply shoot them down due to their small numbers. A ‘win' is defined as capturing the enemy trench. During World War 1, the war was fought in this sort of way.   Snipers will be on the high a...

A REDEFINED, REDESIGNED APPROACH

Authored by Jayaroopinni S S As soon as I parked my vehicle in front of the ATM in one of the busiest streets in Chennai, an unmasked beggar woman with a newborn child came really close to me for alms. I got alarmed and asked her to wear a mask, which she did. This is not the first time I have encountered such an incident since the Covid outbreak. Paupers are everywhere to be seen in India especially in places of worship, restaurants, small tiffin centres, traffic signals, railway stations, etc. The then Union Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot in March 2021 informed Rajya Sabha that India has around 4 lakh beggars according to 2011 census 1 . Giving alms is considered as a dharma, act of love and compassion in various religions. We could still come across people who consider the same. But the modern age ‘begging’ is more than what we have known. When the states are providing food grains and other cooking essentials for a very low price, the context of what is kno...
